Why is gaming the future of Team Building and Employer Branding?

You may have heard of the German company Accenture and how they used gaming as a teambuilding technique to bring employees together and maintain a positive work atmosphere. 

Given the situation due to COVID19 and the desire to respect the restrictions, they decided to make an esports tournament in order to provide their employees with socializing that they were denied at work.

 

Our team at Good Game designed a special tournament for them that met their wishes and needs. The tournament lasted for 5 weeks during which they competed in various titles such as CS:GO, Rocket League, and League of Legends. For the employees to enjoy the whole experience of the new way of connecting without interruption, we did everything behind the scenes.

 

A study done at Brigham Young University found that employees who played together for just 45 minutes felt stronger connected and were 20 percent more productive than teams that enjoyed traditional teambuilding activities.

 

More and more companies are turning to alternative ways of team building that are moving away from classic travel, education and workshops, trips to adrenaline parks or paintball. That's where video games, gaming and us come into play! Gaming is a term that, until recently, had a very negative connotation. That view of gaming and video games is changing as the industry and its understanding continues to evolve. Today, more and more video games are trying to connect with different spheres of life in order to make them more attractive and interesting to mostly younger generations. Accordingly, more and more people are trying to use them in the form of teambuilding.

 

In addition to organizing the event, we particularly focused on providing a platform and ways to improve customer and employee satisfaction within the company.

 

As part of the Hrvatski Telekom e-Liga, a competition in FIFA21 where 1,024 players competed for valuable prizes and the title of the best player of the game, both for the first and second seasons we organized an internal league aimed at connecting employees within the department. During the entire duration of the tournament, an arena for employees was made in which they could measure their strength on the virtual field in FIFA21. In order to create a more interesting atmosphere, an aspect of the prize for the winner of the tournament was included after the finals of the Hrvatski Telekom e-Liga.

As a cherry on top, the event that launched the machine known today as Good Game Global, the largest gaming event designed to connect different companies that are ready to achieve their dose of fun - Good Game Zagreb. The last edition, which took place back in 2019, was attended by 32 companies where they tried to achieve the title of the most accurate company in the game CS:GO. The winner of the tournament was Locastic, who established their dominance for the second year in a row.

 

In addition to entertainment for employees, various activations were set up at the Museum of Contemporary Arts to show the development of video games over the years. All eras were present, from the retro zone where older visitors nostalgically reminisced about their youth, to the more modern VR zone where the bravest tried their hand at the flying experience.

 

For those eager for education, they had the opportunity to attend various panels where giant names in the esports scene talked and exchanged their experiences. With all these events and activations, it is normal for a person to get tired and needs rest and refreshments. Do not worry! Food Trucks and beverage zones were present throughout the MSU to quench visitors ’thirst and hunger.

Good Game Zagreb is an event at which many participants became close to their colleagues and employees of other companies and met their lifelong friends.

As a certain virus came, it put a forced break on the Good Game Zagreb editions after 2019, and this form of socializing needed to be transferred online. Due to the great love for providing a new way of entertainment for companies, the need arose to organize teambuilding using video games - but online. So, instead of sailing, employees move to socialize on virtual maps within CS:GO, compete for the ball and score goals on the grass pitches of Rocket League, or try to win a Winner Winner Chicken Dinner in PUBG.
